Parts of the database had chrashed due to a power failure in the computer centre. They are now back up and running.

26.1.2006 9:34 UTC
Another study similar to the last one will be launched within the next couple of days.

Since you all seem interested here is a little progress report and a look at the future of lhc@home.

Servers:
We have received our new LHC@home servers. Two new dual 3.0 GHz machines. Unfortunately there is a problem with the disks. The disks ids are reordered during the installation process, so that after a reboot the system will try to boot the wrong disks. This can be fixed manually, but this is a problem for the automatic system at CERN. Whenever a security upgrade is needed or some hardware has failed and been replaced the system does a complete reinstall of the servers system disk. It would then require manual interaction to get it to run again. We are hoping to have this problem solved soon.

Sixtrack:
Sixtrack will continue to run with many small studies. Eric MacIntosh is looking into porting a new version of sixtrack to BOINC. This new version will have new physics modelling and beam collimation.

New Apps:
Garfield, a drift chamber simulation, has been ported to BOINC and tested. At the moment it is running on the 100 recycled farm servers we were given by the computer centre. We are now waiting for an official request for resources from ATLAS and other experiments. If we have enough request we will look into porting garfield to windows and moving it to LHC@home.
Pythia and ATLFast have also been ported to boinc.
Pythia is an event generator used by all the experiments at CERN. The idea was to use it in LHC@home to create a database of good noise[1]. ATLFast is a fast and reduced version of the full ATLAS simulation software. This could be used to do preliminary event reconstruction on LHC@home once the LHC is running.

Africa@home:
The Malariacontrol project has been spun-off from CERN. The servers have been relocated to the university of Geneva and to STI in Basel for the beta phase. To learn more about the project go to Africa@home. We are now looking for other projects to run within the africa at home project.

The future:
Sixtrack will continue to run for the time being and we hope to launch more applications. LHC@home will continue also after the LHC starts running, whether it will run sixtrack, one of the new apps or a mixture has not been decided yet.
We would like to have some summer students work on LHC@home related projects, so if you are a CS student and interested have a look at the student programme. On a more personal note I will leave Cern at the end of the month. I do not yet know who will take over the day to day server administration, but i expect Ben will look in on the message boards from time to time.

[1] good noise is important for the physicist. They have to pick out the one interesting interaction from a bunch of other events and maybe even outside sources like cosmic radiation. They therefore need to tune their simulations using generated noise.

LHC had since the last days more work available but in forum and news only silence, still waiting for more feedback there.

Did you see this news (better than nothing) in the LHC forum ?

Alte gehen, neue kommen, betrifft auch den Server.
11.01.2007 11:30 UTC
From the new Admins at Queen Mary, University of London (Previously posted on the message board):

We know things have been very quiet around here with regards answers and keeping you informed and the team would like to thank you for your patience in this regard. There are some users out there who have not only been patient and understanding but also very good at explaining the situation to other users and we thank them for their work.

The migration is not a simple job and we are working hard on making it as seamless as possible so that there will be as little downtime as possible to the service.

We have not updated the news on the website previously for various reasons. The first being we needed to get CERN access accounts which is not as easy as it seems. Then we had to be allowed access to the server and the first thing we went to look at was the BOINC installation so we could get the ball moving on the migration. There was also the issue that we did not have any answers to your questions because the answer frankly to all your questions are "It will migrate to QMUL and from mid to late January be administrated from there". All other problems that you encounter/we encounter will be dealt with as soon as we are installed and ready to go. As this will be a clean install (no you will not lose your stats/credits) we hope that all the issues you have currently will be sorted out by that.

We would like to apologise for the silence and realise it is very frustrating but that there will be no major improvements to the LHC@home server until it is 100% under our adminstration. We would also like to thank the previous people who have worked on LHC@home, mostly in their spare time, some you know like Ben Segal and Chrulle and others you may not like Ignacio Reguero and Phil Defert. These guys have been instrumental in helping us get this move going.

We also have some photos of the unpacking and installation of the new server at http://www.gridpp.ac.uk/lhcathome/photos.html.

We will try to keep you updated on progress as we get closer to the date for the complete switchover.

Cheers,
Alex and Neasan.

BOINC server update Thursday
We will upgrade the LHC@home web servers to the new BOINC server code with the "Bootstrap" theme on Thursday 7 December. The new style and layout can already be seen on the LHC@home development project..

During the intervention, from 09 UTC on Thursday, there may be intermittent availability of the LHC@home servers, so BOINC clients may back off and try to upload data later.
Irgendwas scheint da schiefgelaufen zu sein. Im Client bekomme ich ein
LHC@home: Hinweis vom Projektserver
Invalid or missing account key. To fix, remove and add this project.
Nicht weiter schlimm, aber wenn ich mich dann neu anmelden will, erhalte ich folgende Meldung:
No account with email address xx@xxxxx.de exists. Please go back and try again.
Habt Ihr das gleich Problem?

Gruß Odi

Ok, ich bin scheinbar nicht der einzige:
I also started getting error 'Invalid or missing account key' and the site didn't recognize my email address when I tried to log in. Started happening last night at some point.

Almost like something or someone just deleted my account, doesn't show up on the teams list either I was participating in and all the credit has disappeared.

I created a new account with the same email and it went through just fine as if I never had registered with the same email previously.

Missing accounts
Due to a too aggressive spam-cleaning campaign (our fault), we have accidentally deleted some valid accounts on Monday. We have restored a backup copy of the BOINC database, and will recover the missing account data.

If you get a message "missing account key" from your BOINC client, you may be affected. We expect that we can fix this later today, once we have verified the data sets. Hence there is no need to register again.

My apologies for this mishap.
Ich bin wieder da ;)
